Testing / Inspection

The importance of scheduling an elevator testing or inspection in advance

Testing:

Testing is needed on an annual basis. There are CAT1, CAT3, and CAT5 tests conducted on elevators. The numbers correlate to how often in years each test is required to be done. For example, you must do a CAT5 test every 5 years. CAT1 tests are needed every year. Some are more involved the others. You can get more information by calling one of our QEI (qualified elevator inspector) certified representatives to walk you through the process.

Inspection:

When elevator inspectors conduct their annual inspections, they check a number of safety items making sure the elevator is in compliance. If the elevator is not, a report is issued with violations that need remedying within a certain time period. Here is a list of popular items inspectors will check;

  • Testing is up to date
  • Emergency light works
  • Phone is working per code
  • Fire service is working per code
  • Cleanliness of elevator equipment, pit, car top, and equipment room

In most states, the owner is responsible for making sure the elevators are up to code and in compliance. This is why it’s so imperative you have a preventive maintenance program and not a reactive maintenance program.

When you have a maintenance company with a first class program, this reduces liability, extends the life of the equipment, less downtime / less breakages, smoother riding experience, and less costly large repairs.
